Charities NOT exempt from Making Tax Digital for VAT

Depsite all HMRC publications on their Making Tax Digital programme stating that charities will be exempt from Making Tax Digital, they have clarified to the Charity Tax Group that this does not actually apply to VAT (currently the only part of the Making Tax Digital programme with a definite start date - April 2019). This is highly disappointing news given that charities and universities have been operating under the assumption for the last two years that being exempt from Making Tax Digital meant exactly that. BUFDG will be contacting HMRC to discuss this further. More information can be found on the Charity Tax Group website, although there has been no official communication from HMRC about this.
