Modern Slavery Act - work to be done

26 April 2017      Matt Sisson, Projects and Membership Manager

With the introduction of the UK’s Modern Slavery Act (MSA), commercial organisations with a turnover of £36 million or more are required to produce an annual statement stating what steps they have taken to eradicate modern day slavery from their own organisation and from their supply chains. This includes UK Universities. According to a recent review, universities are currently behind other sectors when it comes to meeting their requirements under the Act, and so there is still plenty of work to be done.

Dr Caroline Emberson, Enterprise Fellow, University of Nottingham Business School, has written an article for us on where universities currently are on the journey, and the next steps they should take. You can read this in full on the HEPA website. If you’re not sure what stage your university is at with compliance, then this is a useful read. If you need to increase your knowledge in this area, then HEPA are working with the Ethical Trading Initiative (who also provide training via CIPS in this area) to run a one day training course, covering all you need to know, that will run in different locations around the country where demand permits. If you would like to hear more about this, please express your interest to Emma Keenan. Additionally, the University of Nottingham are running a Free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) starting on 8th May entitled, “Ending Slavery”.  It is a 4-week course, and you can find out more information or register here
