AUDE have recently published a report, in support of last month’s Diamond Review II, about the role that university estates have played in driving efficiency. More efficient use of space has led to universities saving £7.2bn over the ten years since 2002/03. The report is accompanied by a number of case studies, and a blog on the efficiency exchange website highlighting six examples of strategies that HEIs are using.
These strategies include enabling year-round use of facilities such as libraries, and extending opening hours; making more facilities, particularly research facilities, more accessible to business; striking the right balance between specialist facilities and flexible space; and achieving space efficiencies through campus rationalisation and shared space.
If you’re looking for any ideas, then between the report and the case studies there is plenty there to get your teeth into.
