Last week’s Counter-Fraud update highlighted the risk that students returning to campus or arriving for the first time could prove easy targets for scammers and fraudsters. Unfortunately the examples have already begun to trickle in, with a fraud attempt targeted at students at a number of universities, attempting to trick them into revealing identifying and login information in return for ‘grant funding’.
In related news, a false email address/purchasing order scam is doing the rounds, with fraudsters targeting university suppliers with .-ac.uk or .ac.uk.com email addresses, and then requisitioning goods using falsified purchase orders.
Finally, a fraudster based in Bulgaria is hoping to take advantage of any lax financial processes in the sector with un-requested invoices for listings in the 'Euro Business Guide'. Please see the sample invoice on the Fraud boards, and run the name/bank details through your system to double check that you've caught it.
