Many people consider VAT on Real Estate to be the most troublesome area of VAT. Effective planning in this area can also mean the difference between success and failure for many HE projects.
BUFDG are pleased to announce that Martin Scammell, who is one of the UK's leading experts on VAT on Real Estate (and the author of a veritable bible on the subject: "VAT on Construction Land and Property" and a contributor to "Tolley's Property Taxation") has agreed to lead two one day courses covering the key issues on this topic for the HE sector. This course, will aim to cover all the basics you will need to know if you want to identify potential issues and opportunities effectively in your own institution.
The course is aimed at University Tax Managers or other finance or estates staff who have had limited experience of VAT and/or the HE sector, and may be responsible for completing the VAT return and/or advertising on or working with professional advisers on property VAT issues.
This course aims to give you a general understanding of how VAT applies to property and construction, and how this impacts on the HE sector. Drawing on case studies taken from real life in the sector, it provides both an overview and a more detailed examination of specific situations. It won't mean that you can answer every question straight off - no-one can do that. But it will help you to spot issues and opportunities, to advise colleagues on where VAT costs or savings might arise, and to have enough knowledge to research matters further and to use advisers efficiently.
NOTE: This course aims to give an overview of the VAT regime for Real Estate and is not primarily aimed at those who regularly attend Martin's sessions. The Advanced VAT & Property course running the day after this course will cover some of the same areas as this course, and so we would not recommend attending both days.
If you feel in need of a refresher course, but are also interested in learning more, BUFDG are anticipating re-running both courses in the autumn, and we would recommend that you attend this course now and the advanced course later in the year.
