Many people consider VAT on Real Estate to be the most troublesome area of VAT. Effective planning in this area can also mean the difference between success and failure for many HE projects.
BUFDG are pleased to announce that Martin Scammell, who is one of the UK's leading experts on VAT on Real Estate (and the author of a veritable bible on the subject: "VAT on Construction Land and Property" and a contributor to "Tolley's Property Taxation") has agreed to lead two one day courses covering the key issues on this topic for the HE sector. Martin will be ably assisted on this course by Kerry Sykes from the University of Cambridge.
This course aims to provide an insight into current ideas and concerns, helping HEI's to maximise opportunity and minimise risk, enabling them to challenge HMRC effectively and perhaps to minimise advisory costs.
The course is aimed at experienced University Tax Managers or other finance or estates staff who have responsibility for the institution's VAT affairs who are already familiar with the main VAT and Property concepts.
This course aims to update and expand your knowledge of how VAT applies to property and construction, and how this impacts on the HE sector. It concentrates on hot topics, both specific to the HE sector and of wider importance, and draws on real-life examples to consider the implications, the threats and the opportunities, and how to translate the big picture issues into practicalities.
It also aims to provide an insight into the background to change, and a critical look at HMRC's approach. Some key issues remain unresolved, and attendees are encouraged to share their own perspectives and experience throughout the day.
Martin will be joined by an associate of his, Michael Risdale of law firm Wedlake Bell. Michael works in the field of tax litigation, and has recent experience or working with the HEI sector. Michael will be on hand to contribute to the discussions throughout the day and will deliver the session on "keeping your affairs in order" [for the avoidance of doubt not in any way associated with John Terry's alleged exploits!]
NOTE: This course will cover the more technical aspects of VAT on Real Estate and is not recommended for those with less than 2 years of relevant VAT experience.
This day will also cover some of the same areas as the VAT & Property Introduction day, and so we would not recommend attending both days. If you feel in need of a refresher course, but are also interested in learning more, BUFDG are anticipating re-running both courses in the autumn, and we would recommend that you attend the VAT & Property Introduction day now and attend this advanced course later in the year.
