Graduates warned

16th June, 2008
EducationGuardian is warning this year's crop of graduates about the job market in the current economic climate. Many of the traditional milk-round companies are trimming back their numbers, with talk of the June round of entrants being dropped altogether.

Deloitte has noted a 22% increase in applications this year, despite offering the same number of jobs as in previous years - leading to speculation that those choosing to take a gap year after graduation has declined. Other advice to new graduates is to broaden their career search both job-wise and geographically, and to remember that it is easier to get a job if you already have one - so prepare to compromise.

It is expected that some sectors will benefit from the credit crunch. For example, the job security of teaching and other civil service positions leads to an increase in applicants during an economic downturn. Meanwhile there are question marks over many others, including banking and construction.
