Cracking down on umbrella companies

HMRC have published new guidance for individuals who are engaged through an umbrella company to evaluate whether they are involved in tax avoidance schemes. The guidance Check if you are at risk of tax avoidance includes an interactive risk checker where the individual provides key information to HMRC and HMRC tells them whether or not they may be involved with a tax avoidance scheme.
In addition, individuals are advised to check their payslip and look out for payments received in bank accounts that are not shown on the payslip, being charged fees, having a payment described as, for example, a loan and comparing their income against HMRC’s online tax and NIC checkers.
