HMRC Two-Step Security Mandatory from September

08 August 2017      Amanda Darley, Head of Operations and Engagement

From September 2017, HMRC will make it a requirement for all businesses using their online tax accounts to register for '2 Step Verification' (2SV). This adds an additional layer of security, however, some universities had been concerned that it doesn't work well for businesses as it requires a code to be sent to a registered mobile phone number. Whilst this may prove impractical, it is possible to register a landline instead. When logging into tax accounts during September users will have to enter the required details for 2SV so it would be wise to decide on these details and register them, to ensure a user isn't caught by surprise when trying to access the university's HMRC tax accounts in September. HMRC's full email can be found here, and some tips on how to implement this practically can be found in this discussion board thread.
