Chancellor's spring statement - Scientists and researchers visas

In his spring statement Philip Hammond announced that from Autumn 2019, PhD-level occupations will be exempt from the Tier 2 (General) cap, and at the same time the government will update the immigration rules on 180-day absences so that researchers conducting fieldwork overseas are not penalised if they apply to settle in the UK.

His intention is that from autumn 2019 the UK will be entirely exempt from visa caps for PhD level jobs. The current Tier 2 (General) cap limits the allocation of skilled worker visas to 20,700 for those from outside the UK. According to the Treasury 2,908 of the total 20,700 visas were allocated for PhD level jobs.
