PEG Roundup (covering Employment Taxes & Payroll)

12 October 2022      Julia Ascott, Employment Taxes Specialist

It was a case of “check the news to make sure our slides are still relevant” for the PEG meetings last week.  At the time of writing, the 45% rate of tax has been reinstated and numerous tax bodies/professionals have requested more details on how the repeal of the Off-Payroll Working rules will happen in practice.

There were a number of technical updates at the PEG meetings, including:

  • All of the tax related announcements contained within the fiscal event (aka ‘mini budget’)
  • Holiday pay calculations following the Supreme Court ruling on Harpur v Brazel
  • Rise in the National Living Wage and subsequent erosion of pay spines
  • Reporting the accommodation benefit and changes at HMRC
  • CJRS inspections
  • The ongoing battle with stipends
  • NIHR’s guidance on research participants/volunteers

A considerable portion of the PEGs were focused on how universities were trying to assist employees struggling with the cost of living.  There were a multitude of ideas, some tried and tested that BUFDG will collate and publish as soon as possible.

And finally, there was a request for help with chairing or co-chairing some of the regional PEGs.  If you would like to spend a few hours a year volunteering as a PEG co-chair for your region, BUFDG would be incredibly grateful.

Information on co-chairs and all of the above can be found in our slides.
