Time to Talk - Financial Modelling and Scenario Planning
17th July 2020
Online via MS Teams - 2-3pm
Timings: 2-3pm
Join Chris Petts and James Bulloss from Grant Thornton in a Time to Talk session to discuss Financial Modelling and Scenario Planning.
Chris and James will work through some of the basics of scenario planning and then move into a discussion on some of the more complex issues universities are currently finding. They will cover:
Scenario planning – where to start?
Practical tips for pragmatic planning
What information do you need?
Using the IFS briefing note on the financial sustainability of the HE sector as a starting/discussion point, they will then set the scene with regard to potential financial challenges ahead and discuss what actions universities can take now to plan for each scenario, such as:
undertaking scenario planning at a granular level to ensure that, when student numbers are confirmed, there is the ability to take decisive action quickly based on full knowledge of the facts – knowledge is power!
putting a pre-agreed framework in place to streamline decision making on a ‘Go or No Go’ event
agree trigger points for key decisions (e.g. continuity of certain courses, opening or closure of certain student accommodation or facilities)
prepare the mindset and culture of the organisation to make potentially hard decisions in the future
Assess where each scenario leaves the organisation in terms of funding requirements
Early engagement with key financial stakeholders is a critical success factor
what help may you need?’
