Member Roundtable - Prepare for Umbrellas

The new umbrella company rules will be implemented in April 2026. Where you directly engage with an umbrella company, you will have joint & several liability for the PAYE/NIC of individuals provided by that umbrella. The rules are complex and can drag in arrangements that don't, on the face of it, appear to be umbrella arrangements. Universities will need to carry out proper due diligence of these arrangements to satisfy themselves that they are engaging with a scrupulous organisation who are subjecting ALL income to PAYE/NIC through the payroll.
This will be a two hour meeting, where we'll dissect the new rules and how they might affect universities, then brainstorm/share best practices on how to identify umbrella companies used by your university, (which includes 'purported' umbrella companies that operate in a similar way to an umbrella, such as platform providers), what checks to carry out and how best to educate your colleagues who regularly recruit, procure, engage with agencies and umbrella companies to minimise the risk of joint and several liabilities falling on the university.
