Rebecca Dodd from Mercer and Stuart McLean from UUK will take you through what’s been happening and what is yet to come in the world of the sector wide pension schemes in Higher Education. Rebecca will look at the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) and will share what some institutions have done or are thinking about. Stuart will focus on the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) – the current situation and how things may develop in the future. 09.30 – 10.15 | Environmental Sustainability is everyone's responsibility If 2020 and 2021 brought challenges around the way we live and work as a result of the pandemic, then 2022 will undoubtedly bring further challenges relating to climate change and environmental sustainability. All over the world, people are questioning the behaviours and practices which are leading to loss of biodiversity and climate change, and looking at new ways of working and living. We all await with interest the outcomes of COP26, taking place in Glasgow in November. Looking at our own organisations, how is the relationship between environmental sustainability and financial sustainability developing and how, as finance professionals, can we bring about change in our organisations? 10.30 – 11.30 | Writing an effective Business Case A powerful business case is the key to making good ideas happen. In this fast-paced session, we’ll look at what a business case is and what it needs to do. We’ll explore the three key elements that make a compelling case for change. 10.30 – 11.15 | Optimising Research Finance - Northumbria University The sector level TRAC data recurrently tells us that the financial recovery on research is around 70%. This creates challenges for institutions as other funding streams becoming increasing squeezed (capped UG fees since 2017 and costs continue to rise) and rising costs (staff 5-6%). Optimising external funding therefore becomes essential for institutions in achieving financial sustainability across a portfolio of activities. 14.15 – 15.00 | Understanding Financial Performance through TRAC This session will unpack what TRAC is, the information it uses and the outputs that can be generated from it. We will outline how the data has been used by Government and Funders and the benefits that can be drawn from this. We will consider the benchmarking information that is available and assess the different alayses that can be produced from the data to support the institution. Delegates just need to purchase one ticket to access all the sessions. This will allow access to all the recorded sessions and resources should you miss any throughout the week. Tickets cost £95 plus VAT, however, there will be a 20% discount for additional tickets for staff at the same HEI (see details below). For any queries on the event, please contact rachel@bufdg.ac.uk
Discounts for additional tickets:
When you book your first ticket your booking confirmation email will include a 20% discount code for you to share with colleagues at your own HEI so when the code is used on any additional bookings from the same HEI they will be discounted by 20% (i.e. additional bookings will cost £76 plus VAT when using the code). Therefore, if you have several bookings to make for your HEI, ensure you book a single ticket first, wait for the discount code in the confirmation email and then book the other tickets. If you are likely to have several bookings from your HEI, please co-ordinate this process before any bookings are made if possible, to avoid the need for refunds as much as possible.
