Asma Afzal - Transfer Pricing Manager - Grant Thornton

Asma is a Manager with the Transfer Pricing team at Grant Thornton. She joined the team at GT earlier this year, having previously worked with KPMG UK, EY India and Grant Thornton India. She has over 6 years of transfer pricing experience having worked across complete cycle of transfer pricing projects including policy design, documentation, policy review, audits and dispute resolution. She has extensive experience of working with mid-market as well as large groups, having also worked with public sector entities including universities, housing associations and other charitable insitutions helping them comply with their transfer pricing obligations.

Sarah has over 19 years' experience and leads the provision of VAT and wider tax advice to many universities across the UK in addition to her role leading KPMG's North Indirect Tax team. Sarah's approach ensures that her clients are able to maximise the opportunity to increase VAT recovery and/or identify VAT reliefs while also making sure that tax risk issues are addressed. Sarah enjoys helping her clients on the full range of complex tax matters that arise for universities whether that is dealing with International Tax issues as they arise, supporting on capital projects or anything and everything else that crops up! Outside of work, Sarah can often be found watching her eldest daughter in swimming galas or her youngest daughter in football matches and inspired by them is trying to be more active herself!

Robin Bailey - Tax Director - Mazars

Robin is a director within Mazars Global Mobility team. He has over 17 years’ experience in expatriate taxation, providing employers with practical tax efficient solutions that consider the tax and non-tax considerations of managing internationally mobile employees (IME), whilst ensuring they are compliant. Robin has worked with a number of HE institutions to help them regularise their employment tax and payroll compliance obligations for their remote workers. He has also provided several other employers in the HE sector with ad hoc advice, including social security contribution guidance for University employees working with the UN on JV projects, and tax advice in respect of commuters
Robin provides thought leadership on topical technical issues, speaking at several industry events and writing articles, with a focus on the Higher Education sector. Robin presented on how to manage STBV in the June 2021 BUFDG annual conference and guidance on managing remote workers in the 2022 conference. Plus, he has provided BUFDG with training sessions on social security contributions for IME, and tax and social security considerations for remote workers.

Anne-Marie Boden - Senior Manager Employment Solutions - KPMG

Anne-Marie has over 30 years’ experience in employment tax and joined KPMG in 2013. Anne-Marie spent over 18 years working for HMRC. But don’t hold that against her, what it means is she is able to ‘think like HMRC’ and this enables her to help her clients minimise the impact of HMRC compliance reviews. Anne-Marie is a specialises in working with public sector bodies, she is currently advising a large number of clients on the impact of the off payroll working rules, expenses and benefits, Travel and Subsistence, HMRC enquiries, National Minimum Wage, holiday pay and termination payment to name a few. But this is not all there is to her, in a former life she was lucky enough to meet the Queen when she won the Royal Welsh Horse Show on her show pony. She also once won the prize for most perfect butternut squash at the allotment society show!

Peter is a Corporate Tax Director specialising in HE with over 17 years’ experience advising the sector on UK and international direct tax matters.
Peter leads KPMG’s HE direct and international tax work across the Midlands and is a core part of KPMG’s wider national public sector and charities tax teams.
Peter has considerable experience of the issues facing universities in relation to charity tax matters, overseas activities, research and consultancy, the formation and operation of subsidiary companies and joint ventures as well as strategies to minimise taxation through group planning, including gift aid, distributable reserves planning, non-primary purpose activities and collaborative projects.

Millie is a Corporate Tax Senior Manager specialising in HE with over 15 years of experience advising the sector on UK and international direct tax matters.
Millie is a core part of KPMG’s wider national public sector and charities tax teams, and leads the delivery of corporate tax and international tax advice to the sector in the North.
Millie enjoys helping her clients navigate the tax implications associated with international activity as well as delving into the more UK-specific tax issues that can come up around charity taxation, group restructuring, development plans, etc.
When she is not having fun grappling with her clients' interesting and varied tax issues, Millie enjoys volunteering as chair of governors at her local primary school, swimming and walking in the Peak District in the hills on her doorstep!

He has 7 years’ experience working in Global Mobility, working on a multitude of clients with the challenge of employing staff who work across international borders. Engaging with a wide variety of companies and industries, advising on matters including tax, social security implications and payroll obligations.

Marie Green - Director - Vialto

Marie leads Vialto Partners’ Higher Education offering globally and advises universities on both domestic and overseas employment tax matters. She has 25 years’ experience helping organisations both in the public and private sector manage employment tax risk, establish robust policies and processes to maximise efficiencies and manage costs. Marie works closely with a significant number of universities helping them to implement their Internationalisation strategies. Recent projects include leading the setup of a JEI in China, hosting a number of global mobility risk workshops, helping HEI’s with understanding the implications of having academics working overseas throughout COVID, supporting a HEI with implementing the right policy and process for the future, advising on senior academic moves from a tax, social security and payroll perspective.

Greg trained as a VAT advisor and has worked in tax technology for the last 7 years. Greg’s particular experience is in automating indirect tax data processes and compliance to ensure that businesses can meet the Making Tax Digital for VAT requirements and file their returns efficiently and correctly. Greg has worked with a number of universities and other major businesses to automate their VAT processes and currently leads KPMG’s outsourced UK VAT compliance offering.

Jen is a Senior Manager in the Southern Indirect Tax team at PwC with over 10 years’ experience in advising Government and Public sector organisations. Her experience includes VAT planning in respect of large capital projects, advising on complex international indirect tax matters, coordinating global indirect compliance and advising on large transactions. Jen works closely with over 30 Universities.

Paul has over 16 years' of experience with KPMG and leads the Employment Solutions practice in Higher Education and the public sector. He provides advice to many Universities on subjects such as Off-payroll working, Stipends, National Minimum Wage, CIS, and all aspects of employer compliance. His most intriguing questions come from Universities (Where else can you be asked about a Juggler, a Clown, an Artist and a Poet and the punchline not be a joke). Since joining KPMG Paul has also spent his time trying to escape work, at one point leading a team which swam to France. Ultimately the excitement of employment taxes keeps him coming back.

Dan has over 23 years’ experience supporting clients with the challenges of employing staff internationally, and is part of the dedicated Higher Education specialist team within Vialto Partners. He works with a number of UK universities alongside a variety of clients in the public and private sector, advising on matters including income tax and social security implications of cross border working, business traveller and international remote working compliance and risk, and the management of mobility costs, policies and processes. Dan has written blogs for BUFDG and UHR and also speaks regularly at tax and mobility network events.

Melissa is an experienced global mobility professional who has previously worked as a GM manager at organisations including EON, Pepsi, Ricardo and Safran. In her role as GM manager at Ricardo, Melissa worked with Robin Bailey at Mazars who provided her with GM advisory and compliance support for a large expatriate program. Melissa is currently a global mobility adviser at Exeter University.

Kirsty Rockall - Transfer Pricing Partner - Grant Thornton

Kirsty leads the Transfer Pricing team in the UK. Kirsty joined Grant Thornton after almost 22 years with KPMG, where she was a partner in their Global Transfer Pricing Practice. 2 of those years were spent on secondment to Canada. She brings to the team her significant experience of designing and implementing transfer pricing policies for businesses as they grow, expand, develop and maintain their operations and international presence. Kirsty routinely works on projects that involve implementing transfer pricing strategies that take into consideration the number of stakeholders affected (tax authorities, investors, board etc). As such Kirsty understands how to develop practical solutions that mitigate risk of transfer pricing adjustments/ challenges. She has designed, documented and implemented economic transfer pricing policies and reports for a range of clients, including several higher education institutions and groups with charitable status.

Nasima has over 10 years of cross industry experience working with high profile clients ranging from private and mid tier to FTSE 100 companies. She has specialist expertise in the Oil & Gas and Higher Education sectors. Nasima holds a 1st class BSc Mathematics degree and is a qualified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA).

Iain is a Senior Tax Manager in PwCs Social Business team. Iain has specialised in tax at PwC for over 25 years and works with a wide range of charities and other social business organisations.
As well as providing corporation tax compliance services to Universities and charities Iain advises clients on UK corporation tax issues such as primary and non-primary purpose trading, UK and international structuring, transactional advice, gift aid and the tax implications of operating overseas.
Iain also has significant experience in tax governance advising on all aspects of tax governance from controls and processes around tax to compliance with the Senior Accounting Officer, tax strategy publication and the Corporate Criminal Offence legislation.

Despite working for more than 30 years in VAT in the education sector, Kerry has worked hard to maintain his youthful appearance and general joie de vivre. Many ask how he does this - the answer is simple - Kerry loves VAT, loves education and loves helping people. He also loves pies. His experience includes time as an HMRC Officer, a long spell as Head of Tax at the University of Cambridge, a few years at KPMG and now an independent consultant delivering high quality advice at reasonable rates.

Suzanne is a Corporate Tax Senior Manager with over 15 years of experience as a specialist in the HE sector.
Suzanne is a core member of the Education Tax team, providing advice to many universities across the whole of the UK and leading KPMG's provision of domestic and international corporation tax advice to the sector in Scotland.
Suzanne has significant experience across a range of tax issues facing universities, providing advice in respect of domestic matters such as capital developments, group structuring and intellectual property exploitation, as well as international advice covering a wide variety of countries, from the relatively common India, China and the US, to the slightly more unusual with recent countries advised on including Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.
