Spotlight on Introducing VAT in HE module

21 April 2020      Amanda Darley, Head of Operations and Engagement

This week we’re highlighting the Introducing VAT in HE BUFDG Pro module. While it might sound like this is a module confined to use by VAT specialists in central finance teams, that isn’t actually the case.

This module was designed for all those throughout a university who have to deal with financial issues such as budgeting, purchasing or generating income, to help them understand the VAT implications of their financial decision making.

In particular, it is aimed at:

  • school/department administrators, and other administrative and finance staff based in academic departments who are not VAT experts but have to deal with VAT as part of their role e.g. dealing with departmental budgets, raising POs, coding invoices etc.
  • academic staff who need to consider VAT and budgeting as part of their role e.g. budgeting for research grant applications, raising POs etc.
  • central finance staff who are not VAT experts but have to deal with VAT on transactions, such as Accounts Receivable staff raising invoices, and Accounts Payable staff processing invoices.

It is therefore useful to a very broad range of staff across the whole university.

Of course it is also useful to anyone working in tax who is either new to the role, new to a university setting, new to tax, or just looking for a refresher of some of the basics.

Introducing VAT in HE is part of the BUFDG Pro subscription service, so anyone (in any department) of a BUFDG Pro subscribing university can access this module for free – anyone who doesn’t yet have a BUFDG log in can register for a normal web log in or a ‘quick registration’ e-learning log in here.

The module covers:

  • An overview of VAT
  • VAT on income (including overseas supplies)
  • VAT on purchases (including from overseas)
  • VAT on budgeting

If you want to find out more about more about the Introducing VAT in HE module, or who our other modules are suitable for, and what they cover, then have a look at our guide to Who should undertake which BUFDG Pro modules? (it also covers who our free e-learning modules are suitable for).
