Malaysia Service Tax and Online Education - update

16 January 2020      Andrea Marshall, Tax Specialist

In case anyone has missed it on the discussion board, there has been a change in how Malayisa applies its service tax to digital services.

Malaysia introduced a 6% service tax on imported digital services, similar to Singapore, with effect from 1 January 2020. A UK university took professional advice and were advised to write to the Malaysian Finance Ministry to seek an exemption for online education, which they did back in September. The Malaysian Finance Ministry has now issued a press release announcing various types of service, including online education, as falling outside the scope of the tax. An English translation of the press release can be found here.

Many thanks to Philip Hayes for sharing this good news!
