Greenbank

Greenbank is the specialist ethical, sustainable and impact investment team of Rathbones Group, a FTSE 250 company listed on the London Stock Exchange. Rathbones have been trusted for generations to manage and preserve our clients’ wealth.

We offer high-quality, personalised investment and wealth management services for private clients, charities and trustees.

At Greenbank we empower our clients to invest their money as a force for good, by supporting the transition to a healthier planet and a more equitable society – and we have been doing so for over 20 years. We are one of the most experienced teams in the industry, having launched an ethical portfolio service in 1992 (one of the first in the UK). We have been a member of the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) since 1998, and have been a signatory to the United Nations-backed Principles for Responsible Investment since 2009.

What can we do for you?

We have experience of managing endowments for our university and college clients, so our team understands fully how this sector operates, and the issues faced by Finance Directors and Trustees. We utilise our expertise to create bespoke investment solutions for our clients in the education sector. Ours is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.

Our university and college clients partner with us because we share their ethical values. We invest in companies that we believe are of a long-term benefit to society, such as education, healthcare, renewable energy, or companies that focus on environmental technology. We firmly believe companies engaged in these activities make good financial investments, enabling us to build market strategies to better position our clients' money for growth, while looking to protect it during downturns.

Our clients value our experienced in-house research team’s expertise, and our rigorous investment process. They also appreciate access to our trustee training on ethical and sustainable investing topics, our specialist investment seminars and the information we can provide about writing an investment policy and CC14 guidance.

Stewardship and Engagement

At Greenbank we take our role as stewards of our clients’ capital very seriously. Taking an active approach to our share ownership of companies is part of the Greenbank service and complements our investment analysis.

We do this by engaging with the companies in which we invest

- to address direct concerns about a specific company issue or area of performance

- to encourage best practice, giving internal momentum for positive change within companies

- to further a 'best of sector' investment strategy (for example, in the extractives and pharmaceuticals sectors) by encouraging constituent companies towards more positive behaviour.

We engage with companies by seeking open and constructive dialogue, and our engagement is made on the basis of evidence or rigorous and independent research. If there is little or no progress in relation to the area of concern, we can respond by taking action to escalate our concerns.

We provide all our clients with a detailed summary of the engagement activity that is relevant for their portfolio on a regular basis, and we are always seeking opportunities to represent their views and create positive change on their behalf.

Please do contact us for further information, or a friendly discussion.
