3 - Universities and value

The Higher Education sector has been working hard to communicate the invaluable ways it contributes to UK society. BUFDG has contributed to this effort by supporting finance directors to improve financial communication, assisting the development of value reporting (in particular the use of Integrated Reporting <IR>), and developing our own educational materials. These materials include a series of six short videos exploring the value of universities. Please feel free to share them widely.

Video 3: Universities and Value

Universities are complex organisations with many different stakeholders, and can sometimes struggle to communicating their value. The rise in tuition fees earlier this decade put more pressure on universities to show the value that they deliver for students. As the political debate around fees continues, it risks detracting from the discussion of the wider contribution that universities make to society.

Universities are looking to address this, and are working hard to find ways to get these important messages across. They can’t assume that, amidst a busy news cycle, the public and governments will automatically hear about all the good things that they do. Universities must work together, and work harder, to communicate the invaluable ways they contribute to society.
